We always buy honey labeled as organic. These are sold in grocery stores. But not many of us know that most of this honey is fake. This happens when the demand for honey is too high. Synthetic honey is being produced and sold. It is not difficult to differentiate between real and fake honey. It can be done at home with some simple tests.
Why is synthetic honey bad?
When honey is processed, all its nutrients are lost. Filtration is not a normal process for honey. Manufacturers do it to remove the traces of origin which can be identified through a pollen test. 75% of the honey sold is filtered.
Read the following to know which the fake honey is.
Fake honey is one in which artificial sweeteners like molasses, sugar syrup, dextrose, corn flavors or other additives have been added. This honey is impure. The isotope ration of such a honey will fall in between 2 values. This can prove adulteration.
Real honey obviously comes from the bees. It is not made in a factory. It is not difficult to know whether the honey is real or fake. But some tests have to be conducted to verify that. This has become important because most of the honey being sold is fake.
How to test for the purity of honey
To make the fake honey taste sweet and look thick, the makers will add molasses, sugar syrup, flour, sand, sawdust or chalk. Do the following tests to determine the purity of honey.
The thumb test
Put a small drop of honey on your thumb. It should not spill or spread. If it does, it is fake.
The water test
Add a teaspoon of honey to water in a glass. Pure honey will settle at the bottom. Fake honey will mix and will be seen around the sides.
Honey is flammable
Dip a matchstick in honey. Then try to light it normally by striking it against the match box. If it lights up, it is pure. If it doesn’t, then it contains water mixed in it.
Add some water and vinegar into the honey. If it is fake, the mix will become foamy.
Difference between real and fake honey
The following are the physical properties by which you can distinguish real and fake honey.
Fake : foamy, runny, drips easily, rough texture, separates into layer, sour smell.
Real : not foamy, thick and trickles, smooth texture, never separates into layers, no smell
It is easy to fall prey to fake honey. One must always be careful. Do remember the tricks given above and always buy true organic honey.
