The FDA has recently warned that those favourite turmeric spices in the market may just have lead contamination.
This has made the spices highly toxic and harmful to our health. The FDA identified two producers of popular turmeric herb spices with the contaminated products and they are still investigating others as well.
These producers include JM Exotic Foods and Gel Spice, the FDA ordered that they recall their brands from all major supermarkets and stores as quickly as possible as these products are heavily toxic and proven to be highly carcinogenic in nature.
Lead is a heavy metal that is known to cause several severe ailments particularly when consumed and some of these diseases include:
- Cardiovascular problems
- Brain function damage
- Bone abnormalities and disorders
It’s alarming because this turmeric spice is a regularly cooking ingredient for most homes in the United States.
Now lead is believed to be quite easily found in turmeric products including the powder and this is because the spice is predominantly grown in South Asia and in India to be precise. It has been discovered that the soil in which this spice is grown has high levels of lead and this heavy metal naturally forms a major part of the makeup of the spice.
Turmeric from India is processed and exported to the U.S and consequently ends up on the shelves of major supermarkets and stores, then subsequently in the homes of consumers.
This heavy metal can accumulate in the body system and cause both physical and mental disorders. It is extremely dangerous to pregnant women and children.
The FDA advises that people go for checkups to determine the level of toxic lead in their blood.
Gel Spice Inc. is taking more precautions in ensuring that both their turmeric brand and company name is not completely tarnished by this scandal.
