Is the diet of the Hunza people the reason that they live for such a long time? They are thought to be the healthiest people in the world and have a cancer free population.
But who are the Hunza? They are a small group of people that live in Northern Pakistan. It is extraordinary to think that some of these people live until the age of 120 years, and that there are no known reported cases of cancer.
So what do the Hunza people eat?
- Their diet consists of raw vegetables and fruit
- They eat apricots in their everyday diet
- Apricots are eaten fresh and dried
- They eat various cereals like millet, buckwheat and barley
- Their diet is rich in nuts

They do not snack, eat very little and spend their days walking. They are a nomad people.
They grow and harvest all their own food.
What about fasting?
The Hunza people do not eat much when their fruits are not ripe for the harvet. During this time they drink juice from dried apricots.
Is it this diet that makes them healthy?
Medical experts believe it is. Their research identifies the abundance of apricots for being the reason they are cancer free. Apricots contact a very strong anti-cancer agent, Vitamin B-17, and perhaps this is the reason for their long and healthy life.
Hunza people look younger than they are and women are known to be strong and healthy, able to give birth at even the age of 65. A newspaper story in 1984 once covered a Hunza man, Said Abdul Mbundu, whose papers showed his birth at 1832. That made him 112 years old and travelling!
