As you get older you will start noticing age spots on your skin. They are small, light brown or tan in colour, and mostly appear on the hands, shoulders, arms and face. They can be small or big, do grow in size, and are usually found on parts of the body that are regularly exposed to the sun. They are horrible.
Why do we get age spots?
Everyone spends time in the sun, whether consciously or not. Even if we use the best sunblock, there are times our skin is exposed. After years of exposure to the sun, age spots start to develop. We have melanin in our skin which is what gives us colour. When the sun is on our skin, the production of melanin is increased, which is what gives us a tan. Too much exposure causes damage and spots start to appear where the melanin was or is produced in high concentrations.
Can we stop age spots?
Stay out of the sun. Use a high SPF sunblock every day and wear a hat. Cover up. If you are fair skinned, or have a history of sunburn, you may be more likely to develop these spots.
Are age spots dangerous?
They are not. But if any of your spots change shape or colour, or grow visibly, you should see your doctor, health care practitioner or dermatologist. Take note of your spots and see a doctor if:
- They change colour
- They change shape
- Have an irregular or odd border
- Grow quickly
- Are itchy, red, sore, tender, or bleeding
Can anything get rid of these spots?
There are treatments that a professional can offer you, such as a chemical peel, laser therapy, freezing or bleaching. These treatments are expensive and may have toxic ingredients.
