Most plastic products consist of a chemical known as BPA. This chemical is known to be responsible for several ailments.
When you consume food placed in plastic bags or containers, the food gets tainted by this chemical.
Studies have shown that when hot food is put in plastic bags and containers the chemical gets into the food quicker.
It has been revealed that about 175 chemical compounds of plastic are directly responsible for diseases such as poor foetal and fertility development and even cancer.
Here are some plastic that are commonly used and some of them could seriously endanger your health.
HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)
This plastic is usually used for water and milk jugs as well as for storing other dairy products.
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate Ethylene)
This is one of the most commonly used plastics for packaging drinks and food.
It is widely used because it is believed to be a safe and non-leaching plastic. However, studies have revealed that when exposed to heat, PET plastics will release toxic metallic mineral antimony into your food and drinks.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
These plastics are made of compounds known as phthalates which helps to ensure they are pliable, however phthalates can leach out of PVC plastics quite easily. Another chemical which PVC is known to release especially when in contact with fatty foods is di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA) and this is am extremely harmful chemical compound.
LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)
This plastic is mainly used for frozen food and bread bags. It is not known to leach toxins but heat exposure could make it harmful.
This plastic can leach out a large number of chemical compounds into food.
This compound is found in food tubs and bottles as well as reusable plastic containers. They are not known to leach out toxins.
There are also other plastics such as polycarbonate which is used for making reusable water bottles and baby bottles and it is a shatter-resistant material.
This plastic is known to leach out bisphenol-a (BPA) into drinks and food. However, this plastic and others like it are labelled as #7 which means they are safe for human use.
BPA like phthalates are known as endocrine disruptors and they hinder our natural hormone production causing fertility issues and cancer.
In the U.S plastic wrap is made up of PVC and also consists of a plasticizer known as di(2-ethylhexyl)adipateor DEHA.
DEHA has been linked with liver tumors in lab mice. Studies have shown that DEHA leach out from plastic wraps into food especially fatty foods.
In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas it was proven that hormone-disrupting chemicals leach from practically all known plastics and that includes BPA-free plastics, the findings were published in the Environmental Health Perspectives.
