Many people may not know this but anxiety attacks are a form of mental illness. What triggers this attack can vary from person to person and where an individual may experience anxiety attacks when under tremendous stress and strain, another person may have an anxiety attack under completely different circumstances, such as being around people or being in a confined space. When experiencing an anxiety attack, a person may have symptoms like shortness of breath, an increased heart rate and persistent sweating even in a well-ventilated environment.
There are prescription medications that you can take to control your anxiety attacks, however the drawbacks of these drugs are their unpleasant side effects. You should know that anxiety attacks can be controlled without you taking any of these conventional medications, all you need to do is to practice a yoga technique that will vary your breathing rate to help relieve you of your anxiety attack. This yoga technique is known as pranayama.
One yoga teacher known as Gillian.B. believes that if you practice this yoga exercise regularly you will go a long way to dealing with your anxiety problems.
Pranayama is also known as a nostril breathing yoga practice. You can try this technique in the following way.
- Place the thumb and the ring finger of your right hand on your right and left nostril respectively.
- Lift your thumb while closing your left nostril with your ring finger and inhale through your right nostril.
- Close your right nostril with your thumb and exhale through your left nostril, then repeat the process several times over.
When you do this frequently, especially when you are about to experience an anxiety attack, you will soon be able to regulate your heart rate and perspiration which are symptoms of anxiety attacks. You should also practice this yoga exercise in a secluded area, away from prying eyes and noise.
