This may come as a shock to some people but for others it may not even cause them to blink, but it has been revealed by a famous chef by name of Jamie Oliver that burgers made by McDonald’s fast food chain is harmful to your health.
It is surprising that mainstream media outlets did not cover the story as extensively as it may have deserved considering that McDonald’s burgers are basically a regular meal for the average American.
However, Mr. Jamie Oliver had for several years been on numerous documentaries, talk shows and interviews trying to sensitize people on the dangers of consuming McDonald’s burgers.
In one interview he had said that the beef used in the burgers consisted of fatty portions that had been literally washed with ammonium hydroxide and then used as fillings for McDonald’s burgers.
Jamie Oliver referred to this production process as the ‘pink slime procedure’. The ammonium hydroxide used to wash the fatty beef is hazardous to the health of human beings let alone the fatty beef used as fillings.
The alarming aspect of this is that most consumers have no idea that they are consuming this harmful chemicals compound as they consume burger after burger at McDonald’s.
The Latin American McDonald’s franchise managing company known as Arcos Dorados when asked about this practice categorically stated that they did not practice this type of process in their region of operation. It must also be noted that in Ireland and the U.K meat is provided by local meat merchants’ suppliers and so pure beef is used in the burgers for the McDonald’s franchise there.
Back in the U.S it is interesting to note that other fast food franchise like Taco Bell and Burger King have stopped using ammonium hydroxide in their meat processing.
The question asked by many people is why the McDonald’s fast food chain in the U.S couldn’t adopt the policies of their franchise in Latin America and Europe in terms of the source of their beef all this while.
Ironically only recently McDonald’s changed their recipe and stated that they had stopped using beef fillers for their beefburgers, surprise, surprise!
It seems like the Jamie Oliver campaign struck a serious note and McDonald’s fearing a drastic drop in sales decided to do the right thing.
Whatever the case may be it is advisable that if you are truly looking to keep fit and maintain a healthy life you should consume more healthy and natural foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
