It is not uncommon to see kids wearing braces which are designed to help them keep their teeth in shape while it grows. However, apart from the occasional bullying by classmates in the school playground as a result of wearing braces. The materials used in making these braces comprises of an alloy made up of a number of potentially hazardous metals, such as; nickel and iron.
Researchers from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina have conducted several studies into the health risks of braces and have uncovered startling results. One case that was highlighted by the scientists from the Faculty of oncology was a 31 year old patient that had complained of having some very serious mouth pains. However, on a closer look by his dentist, it was discovered that he had a cancerous tumor located in his jaw known as osteosarcoma.
Not knowing how this man could have had this cancerous tumor, scientists began an extensive investigation into how this had come about and discovered that the patient had a malformation of his teeth and had serious pain in both his fixed and loose teeth. The tumor also had a huge concentration of metals which can be readily found in your everyday dental braces.
Sadly, for this patient his treatment didn’t go according to plan as the tumor had spread to his entire mouth. However, his case led to further research by scientists into his condition and the results of the studies revealed that wearing dental braces can be potentially dangerous. They revealed that an extensive wearing of braces for a long period of time should be discouraged and while wearing these dental braces the person should maintain a balanced diet to help neutralize the effects of the metals in the body.
