It’s beginning to sound like a cliché but it must be said that organically grow food is the best for your health and wellbeing.
While the argument for genetically modified food (GMO) is valid to a school of thought, the dangers of the pesticides and other preservation chemicals used to our health is a cause for concern.
In the same breath, just like organically grown food, organically raised animals are much better than the GMO ones.
FDA say that chicken raised under the latter are pumped full of harmful chemicals that can give us meat that is packed full of cancer-causing arsenic compounds.
So What Is Arsenic?
This chemical compound can be in an organic or inorganic form, both forms are harmful to your health and even that of animals.
Researchers however believe that inorganic arsenic is more harmful than organic arsenic and also that it is carcinogenic in nature.
One can be exposed to arsenic from other sources such as:
- Drinking polluted water
- Eating some food products such meat, fish, poultry, dairy products and shellfish
What Are The Health Implications Of Arsenic Poisoning?
Overexposure to arsenic poisoning can lead to the following health complications.
- Nervous system toxicity
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Muscle cramping
- Stomach aches
- Stiffness and numbness
- Changes in skin pigmentation
If you are exposed to extreme amounts of inorganic arsenic it can be lethal.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have stated that arsenic is carcinogenic and poisonous.
According to the IARC arsenic can also be found in tap water as well as in some types of food.
Arsenic is responsible for skin cancer but it has also been known to cause bladder and lung cancer.
What is even more alarming is that cancer begins to show within the first year of exposure to arsenic.
Chicken Riddled With Arsenic
Conventionally raised chicken have a diet that consists of organic arsenic and this could quite easily change to inorganic arsenic and this can lead to very serious health issues.
It is the additives in the chicken feed that changes the organic arsenic to inorganic arsenic.
The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine and the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition are fully involved in trying to know the levels of arsenic found in chicken consumed.
Farmers include chemicals in chicken feed that is meant to ensure that their chicken gain weight, these chemicals include arsanilic acid and 3-Nitro which are responsible for transforming the organic arsenic to inorganic arsenic and these farmers have been warned to stop using these chemicals because of the health dangers to humans.
But this is an ongoing battle as not all farmers are adhering to the warning and one chemical that is commonly used is Histostat which is known to increase the weight of chickens.
So What Are The Preventive Measures We Can Take?
Here are ways you can avoid eating chicken that is riddled with arsenic.
- Eat traditionally grown chicken
- Check all labels before purchase
It was recently revealed in a statement by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy that high levels of arsenic is found in about 3/4 of farm bred chickens and organically raised chickens breeds had high arsenic levels in only 1/3 of the chickens raised.
It is difficult to prevent arsenic in its entirety but it would be safer to consume organically bred chickens.
