The human body predominantly consists of water. All of our muscles, tissues and organs have a high concentration of water; as a matter of fact it is widely believed that our kidneys and muscles consist of about 73% of water, our brain is thought to consist of 76% of water while our lungs and blood comprise of 90% and 83% of water respectively.
It is therefore crucial that we consume sufficient amounts of water on a daily basis. The ideal amounts of water to be consumed by men and women is 12 cups and 9 cups respectively.
The consequences of insufficient amounts of water in your body are as follows:
Low Urine Output
It is normal for you to urinate between six to seven times daily. When you don’t drink enough water your urine output is low and this is dangerous as toxins accumulate in your body and you are not able to get rid of them due to insufficient water consumption.
Dark Coloured Urine
If you do not drink sufficient amounts of water on a daily basis the colour of your urine will be a dark yellow colour. What is acceptable is a light yellow colour. The dark colour is caused by your kidneys secreting excess amounts of toxins in your urine. However, there are also other reasons why your urine may be darkened, here are some reasons;
Health issues like
Food colouring, some fruits and certain medications such as:
- Vitamin B
Increased Risk Of Constipation
By not drinking sufficient amounts of water daily, you increase your risk of frequent constipation. This has its own health risks as the waste matter gets re-absorbed into your bloodstream. Water is necessary to help digest your food and also aid it down your digestive tract and colon.
Increased Hunger Pangs
When you drink sufficient amounts of water daily you reduce your desire to eat all the time. The hypothalamus sends signals to your brain that you are hungry when in fact all you need is to quench your thirst. You also increase your risk of being overweight and obese when you are constantly eating.
Increased Skin Dryness
If you don’t consume enough water your skin is more than likely to be dry and the appearance of wrinkles become more pronounced. Drink sufficient amounts of water to rehydrate your skin.
Compromised Immune System
When you don’t consume sufficient amounts of water daily you increase the accumulation of harmful toxins in your body which can get into your bloodstream and compromise your immune system. When this happens your body will not be able to fight off infections easily and your chances of being ill most times is increased.
As mentioned earlier the brain consists of about 76% of water. When you don’t drink sufficient amounts of water daily you put undue pressure on your brain by starving it of oxygen and this results in nagging headaches.
When you don’t drink sufficient amounts of water, you tend to have a dryness of your water and an increased desire to drink fluids. So you should always quench your thirst by drinking enough water daily.
If you think that by drinking caffeinated drinks like coffee you will do your body some good, well you thought wrong. This is because these drinks tend to further dehydrate your body which leads to a shortage of oxygen to your muscles and results in tiredness and fatigue. You need to drink lots of water to avoid undue fatigue.
Increased Joint Pains
Water also serves as a lubricant for your joints and prevents bones from rubbing against each other leading to joint pains. So drink lots of water to avoid such pains.
