For years garlic has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is rich in antioxidants, can be eaten raw or cooked, is a natural flavouring and very beneficial for your health.

BUT BEWARE! Some of the garlic you are buying or eating may come from China. And it may be filled with chemicals and it may be toxic. Apparently in 2014 almost one third of our garlic was imported from China. There is very little quality control in China and we are not sure how the garlic is cultivated, which means you really should not eat it.
If you buy local garlic you can check what goes in it and which, if any, pesticides have been used. In China they use pesticides that are not tested, that are not legal and that include prorate and parathion. This means your garlic, rather than being healthy, is toxic.
A few checks when you buy your garlic
- Ask where it has been grown
- If it has no root or stem, it is possibly from China
- If it is light, it is possibly from China
The Chinese often remove the stem and root to make shipping lighter and cheaper.
Buy your garlic from a local farmer’s market if possible. It should be rich in taste and flavour.
You could consider growing your own garlic too. It has very few calories, is filled with nutrients and can be used to combat sickness and especially, the common cold. It is easy to grow and does not require too much attention.
