This fast food is widely popular but it has started receiving lots of criticism in recent times. Hot dogs have more than 7 billion annual consumers in the United States. This makes it the most widely enjoyed fast food in history. The latest findings show that it has also achieved one more feat – it is the leading cancer-causing fast food that has been associated with 4 types of cancer.
The history of hot dogs in the US goes back to the 1800s when the German immigrants brought it along with them. They became instantly popular and soon they were the major landmark associated with the 21st century.
According to the latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is caused by all processed meats. This includes red meat.
Hot dogs have also been categorized in this group because they have chicken, beef and pork in them. Unfortunately, manufacturers usually use leftovers from pork chops or steaks for cutting costs. They even use ‘edible’ animal parts like animal heads and feet, skins, and fatty tissue.
Hot dogs are produced by grinding and mixing different ingredients to create thick paste. Then additives are added in abundance for enhancing the mixture. The additives include the following:
– Corn syrup
– Large amount of salt
– Monosodium glutamate or MSG
And various chemicals that have been found to be associated with cancer.
It is alarming that the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and many similar institutions claim that the risks are same for both smoking and hot dogs.
You must be especially concerned about the additives nitrites and nitrates in hot dogs. They are much more harmful than others. During production, both of them will bind with amines due to high levels of heat. This leads to the formation of nitrosamines. These compounds formed have been associated directly with various cancer types including:
– Colon cancer
– Pancreatic cancer
– Bladder cancer
– Stomach cancer
The American Institute for Cancer Research states that those who take just 1 hot dog per day have a 21% enhanced risk of developing colorectal cancer.
If you thought that you would choose only organic hot dogs, there is bad news for you. Even that has been found to have nitrite and in higher content compared to their traditional counterparts.
