It is not unusual for a typical American to consume a bottle of Diet Cola before or after a meal. Diet cola was produced to satisfy the needs of consumers looking to cut down on their sugar intake and calorie count. However, diet cola also its own issues, it is packed with an artificial sweetener known as aspartame. This sweetener has little or no calories and it’s actually sweeter than your regular sugar. Aspartame is a common sweetener that can be found in diet foods and cola being one.
Studies conducted by scientists at the University of Iowa have discovered that aspartame is even more harmful to our health than previously assumed. The researchers carried out a 10 year study involving about 60,000 participants. The objective of the study was to determine the extent to which aspartame can be detrimental to our health.
Results of the study showed that drinking two bottles of diet cola can raise your risk of coming down with a cardiovascular condition by 30%. As a matter of fact the study revealed that your risk of having a heart attack is increased by 50%.
Apart from these serious health concerns, aspartame can also cause heightened anxiety and depression. Which is believed to add further strain on the heart. Other health concerns associated with consuming aspartame include:
- Abdominal pain
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Personality changes
Amazingly, there are other studies that support the drinking of diet cola, as they are of the opinion that aspartame is not dangerous to your health. One such study was conducted in 2013 by the European Food Safety Authority.
With these apparent contradictions, the onus rests on consumers to decide for themselves which study to believe.
