It is widely believed that people erroneously think that ‘white’ is associated with unhealthy eating habits.
For example white flour and white sugar are both processed and refined products which are pretty much unhealthy.
So naturally people believe that white rice is unhealthy.
Why Do People Think White Rice Is Unhealthy?
- Increased Blood Sugar
People think that white rice will spike their blood sugar level just like other proceeds and refined products.
The colour of the rice however does not determine whether ones blood sugar rises or not. What is important is the glycemic index which in the case of white rice is quite low. It has even been seen that brown basmati rice increases blood sugar levels more than white basmati rice.
- Brown Rice Constitutes Of More Phytates
You will get more phytates from brown rice than you would from white rice. Phytates are also referred to as phytic acid is an anti-nutrient as a result of the fact that it inhibits the proper absorption of healthy minerals obtained in rice including calcium, iron and zinc.
This phytates therefore make white rice healthier than brown rice because the former will provide you with full nutrients while the latter will deprive you of it.
So next time you get into a debate on which is healthier, do more research and don’t get caught up under the misconception that brown rice is healthier than white rice.
