It may come as a surprise to most that the WHO (World Health Organization) is about to classify some of our favorite meats as dangerous like cigarettes.
WHO is about to release its new circular that will classify processed meats like ham, sausages and bacon to be cancer causing. It will also claim that red meat is dangerous to our health. These findings were recorded after scientists from ten nations held a meeting.
According to the Daily Mail, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of WHO) is going to release a statement that puts processed meats in the highest of 5 possible ranks as things “carcinogenic to humans.”
This ranking is going to put bacon and burgers in the same group as arsenic, alcohol, cigarettes, and asbestos. As per the Daily Mail, the scientists came to the conclusion that preservation of meat can involve processes such as smoking carcinogens. As per the UK Department of Health, Red meat has been found to have links with bowel cancer.
This decision from WHO has already started drawing attention from meat experts and scientists. According to the North American Meat Institute, this report is against various studies that show no relation between cancer and meat, and against common sense too.
Dr. Ian Johnson (Emeritus Fellow at the Institute of Food Research), claimed during his interview to the Daily Telegraph that there’s no denying about the epidemiological evidence that shows link between consumption of processed meat and bowel cancer. But these studies show that the size of this impact is much small, and that the overall system is not well defined.
He claimed that it would be inappropriate to say that any negative effects of sausages and bacon on bowel cancer risk can be compared to the hazards from tobacco smoke, which contains chemical carcinogens which can increase the chances of lung cancer in those smoking cigarette by 20 times.
